Wednesday 7 September: Faro to Visby, Gotland
Another lovely sunny morning. The campsite is pretty empty now and we have clear views of the dunes. We head off over the ferry to the mainland of Gotland and make our way to the Blue Lagoon, a flooded quarry that is, we gather, very popular for swimming in the summer. It is pretty blue in fact and I entice Simon in for a swim. It’s really not to cold and shelves steeply so it’s deep. Probably the best swim yet. Just need a sauna afterwards! Instead we walk around the lake admiring the views before driving on to Visby. We try stopping at a Church recommended in the guide book but like many things it is “strangt” (closed). We find our campsite and get settled. We cycle into the medieval walled old town of Visby where we have a delicious and authentic lunch at Bakfickan. Simon has fried herring and I have fish soup. Both delicious. We then explore the cobbled streets, Cathedral and ruined churches within the medieval ramparts. Back at base we find a sheltered spot overlooking the sea for tea and later wine watching the sunset. Local Swedish cheese and bread for supper. Another early ferry to catch in the morning.
