Friday 9 September: Karlshamn to Copenhagen

A very windy night. And raining this morning. The campsite looks very grey and rather miserable. We pack up and head off towards Malmö. The weather improves as we go and after a couple of hours we are driving over the famous bridge to Copenhagen. We are shocked that the toll is £47….. one way!

We find the campsite then make our way into Copenhagen on the S train. 30 minutes. What an amazing city bustling with people and hundreds of bicycles. We go up the Round Tower with 360 views to get our bearings and visit the Cathedral: quite plain inside. Then to Tivoli Gardens, the World’s second oldest amusement park that inspired Walt Disney. We wonder in amazement as the young hurl themselves around on rollercoasters and admire the floral displays and kitsch architecture. Then to the trendy Meatpacking District filled with cafes and bars. We have a beer at Warpig surrounded by grungy youths and select from about 20 different draft home brews. We’ve booked a table at Kodbyens Fiskebar which is definitely edgy! White tiles, steel doors, plain tables and a fish tank. A very industrious vibe but serving fine food indeed. We order a selection of (rather expensive!) starters: crayfish, brill, fish roe, razors clams, scallops and “fish and chips”, all totally delicious and exquisitely presented including edible (we hope) flowers. Our nerves eased by the wine (2 glasses) we return to the Tivoli Gardens where we dare to do the Sky Ride an 80metre carousel above the city. It’s a bit too fast for great views and I confess my eyes were shut quite a bit! It’s still quite warm as we make our way back to base. What a day!
